Southeast Asia's second most visited country receives 22 million tourists

China remained the largest source of tourists with 3.7 million, followed by Malaysia with 2.8 million and India with 1.6 million, Nation Thailand reported, citing Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul.

Russia ranked fourth with 1.2 million, followed by South Korea with 811,246 tourists.

Foreign tourism revenue during the period was estimated to reach 1.08 trillion (US$32.5 billion).

Officials expect tourist arrivals in Thailand to ease slightly in the coming week, driven by a series of major holidays in Asian countries, The Thaiger reported.

South Korea's Chuseok holiday runs from Sept. 24 to 26, while China's Mid-Autumn Festival falls from Sept. 25 to 27, followed by the National Day Golden Week from Oct. 1 to 7.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) forecasts around 250,000 Chinese visitors from Sept. 25 to Oct. 7, up 24% year on year, generating an estimated 11.5 billion baths in tourism revenue.

October bookings from China are already 16% higher, while flight searches have risen 24%, according to data from TAT.

Thailand eyes 33 million tourists by the end of this year.

It welcomed over 32 million tourists last year, becoming the second most visted country in Southeast Asia after Malaysia (42 million).
