Michelin Guide expands to Vietnam's largest island Phu Quoc

Following Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, Phu Quoc will become the fourth destination in Vietnam to be covered by the Michelin Guide’s inspectors.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, said in a statement Phu Quoc stands out for the way its fishing-village food culture intersects with an increasingly diverse restaurant scene shaped in part by international culinary talent.

According to the Michelin Guide, its inspectors assess venues based on five criteria: the personality of the chef as presented in the cuisine, harmony of flavors, mastery of cooking techniques, quality of products, and consistency both over time and across the menu.

One star signifies a very good restaurant, two mean excellent cooking that is worth a detour, and three mean exceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.

According to the Michelin Guide website, there are over 3,000 starred restaurants in nearly 40 countries.

Vietnam now has 11 one-Michelin-starred restaurants -- six in Ho Chi Minh City, four in Hanoi and one in Da Nang.
