A group of 20 tourists from various countries tried their hand at driving all-terrain vehicles at a resort in Kluang District, Johor, in late June.

ATVs are four-wheeled vehicles built for terrains like slopes, trails, and sand dunes, and riding them has been a popular activity over the last decade or so in the Malaysian state.

Johor, Malaysia's southernmost state, situated on the border with Singapore, is a trading and tourist hub.

It boasts attractions like Johor Bahru City, Legoland, and Tanjung Piai, Asia's southernmost point.

Visitors from Vietnam can fly into Kuala Lumpur and travel 330 kilometers to reach the state.

Before setting off, visitors are briefed on skills, safety rules, and rescue procedures. Helmets are mandatory throughout the ride.

Reedha, a staff member at the resort, said the ATVs experience have been around for six years and become a favorite with visitors.

Anyone with a driving license can drive them though they need some level of physical fitness to handle the terrain.

The resort provides around 30 ATVs, and visitors can choose to drive themselves or ride along with a staff. The 20 - 30-kilometer route has a mix of terrains.

Tourists from Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Thailand steer their vehicles up inclines and around bends.

The trail is designed to build in intensity, moving from flat ground to paths, streams, and mud.

Jasmine, a tourist from Indonesia, said the trip gave her a sense of pushing her own limits. The 29-year-old said the route felt well-designed, with a mix of climbs, descents, and sharp turns.

One stretch required riders to slow down and maneuver to avoid the trees lining the forest track.

Thai tourist Nattapong said the experience was more than just a ride through the jungle, and was an immersion into the landscape.

"I wasn't used to driving at first, but after about 15 minutes, I started enjoying it and looked forward to each new challenge."

At the final stop, visitors rested, bathed in a stream, and took in the natural surroundings.

The group completed the drive in about one and a half hours.

Tickets cost between MYR250 and MYR400 (US$61 - 98) per person, depending on the route length and vehicle type chosen. The daily drive wraps up by 6 p.m. each day.
