The advisory on Sept. 22 said the visa-free arrangement for Indian passport holders is intended only for tourism and social visits. Using it to take up employment is a violation of Malaysian immigration rules.

The warning comes as some Indian nationals are reportedly being misled by "unscrupulous agents" promising jobs in Malaysia. According to the High Commission, such false promises can leave travellers facing overstay, illegal status, exploitation, detention and legal action.

"Indian nationals are strictly advised not to travel to Malaysia for work/employment purpose without work permit or visa with reference (VDR)," the mission said.

Indian passport holders can enter Malaysia without a visa for up to 30 days for tourism and social visits, subject to the country's entry requirements. Malaysia's Immigration Department says the visa exemption for Indian citizens, introduced on Dec. 1, 2023, is in effect until Dec. 31, 2026.

However, the exemption does not give visitors the right to work in Malaysia. Indians travelling to the country for employment must obtain the required work authorization, including a work permit or visa with reference (VDR), before entering Malaysia.

For those traveling genuinely for tourism or social visits, the High Commission advised carrying valid and verifiable travel documents to avoid problems at immigration.

These include a confirmed return ticket, hotel booking details, proof of online submission of the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) three days before arrival and a passport valid for at least six months.

Around 10 Indian nationals were denied entry at Kuala Lumpur International Airport despite arriving under the visa-free scheme in June.

According to Gulf News, authorities cited insufficient funds, unverifiable accommodation, missing return tickets and suspected plans to seek employment.

Malaysia received 1.57 million Indian tourists in 2025, the second highest number in Southeast Asia after Thailand's 2.48 million.
