Chinese passenger steals $288 on Singapore-bound flight

Preliminary investigations found that the man allegedly took a passenger’s backpack from an overhead compartment, placed it beside him and rummaged through its contents before returning it without the owner’s knowledge, AsiaOne reported.

Another passenger, Silas Wong, noticed the suspicious behavior and kept the man under observation.

After the plane landed at Changi Airport, Wong located the backpack’s owner and told him what he had witnessed, The Straits Times reported.

The victim checked his belongings and discovered that 250 euros were missing from his backpack.

Officers from the Airport Police Division identified the suspect using information provided by Wong and closed-circuit television footage.

The suspect was arrested, and the money was recovered from his possession.

Under Singaporean law, the Chinese passenger could face up to three years in jail, a fine, or both.
