AirAsia founder sparks debate after calling Singapore Airlines food 'poor'

Fernandes praised Singapore Airlines' service and internet connection but criticized its in-flight food as "poor," the South China Morning Post reported.

His post on Oct. 1 included a photo of the meal, which appeared to show noodles in red gravy served with beef and vegetables.

He then praised AirAsia's in-flight catering brand, Santan, calling it "far far better" and claiming that the Singapore Airlines cabin crew agreed.

Despite his criticism of the meal, Fernandes called the flight "great" and said AirAsia was "not far off" Singapore Airlines.

A Singapore Airlines spokesperson told AsiaOne that the carrier "welcomes and values all customer feedback" and remains committed to investing in and improving its overall customer experience.

Fernandes's remarks came less than two weeks after Singapore Airlines was named the World’s Best Airline for the sixth time at the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards.

The carrier also received awards for Best Airline in Asia, World’s Best Economy Class and World’s Best Economy Class Onboard Catering.

Fernandes’ post drew a range of reactions online, with commenters comparing the two airlines on food, punctuality and cabin space.

Some agreed with his praise of Santan, with one user saying, "nothing compares to Santan food."

Others argued that factors such as punctuality and legroom mattered more to travelers.

One commenter wrote, "but they leave on time," while another joked about the difference in legroom, saying, "at least I don't need chop my legs to the knees to sit in S'pore Air."

Some users also speculated about why Fernandes had been unable to fly with AirAsia.

"Is it because your AirAsia flight was cancelled or delayed? I think that's more important than food or service," one commenter wrote.
