The squad reached the Asian Games quarterfinals for the third time in history following a goalless draw against Thailand in Group E at Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan.

With one point from three group-stage matches, the team advanced to the final eight as one of the two best third-placed teams. In recognition of this achievement, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) awarded the team VND500 million (US$19,220), according to local media reports.

Following the match, VFF president Tran Quoc Tuan congratulated the squad on their performance. Federation officials also told the players to maintain their health, stay fully focused and prepare thoroughly for their upcoming quarterfinal clash against China, scheduled for 1 p.m. (local time) on Sept. 25 at Nagai Stadium.

After three group stage games, Vietnam have scored only one goal. Coach Hoang Van Phuc acknowledged that the squad remain weak in the attacking line.

"We need to make some improvements, specifically regarding our attack and the balance between offense and defense. In the upcoming matches against strong opponents, we will strive to improve and find the back of the net," the 61-year-old coach told the press.

Phuc noted that a significant gap in level made it difficult for the team to create chances against tournament favorites Japan, a match they lost 0-8. He added that during the game against Taiwan, the players had moments where they could have scored more goals but failed to capitalize on chances.

Vietnam's quarterfinal opponent China are rated higher in both technical skill and physical strength.

Phuc stated that the team faced China during a recent training camp in Suzhou, giving them a certain understanding of their opponent’s power. He emphasized that the squad must prioritize physical recovery before deciding on a strategy to counter their next opponent.
