I believe it is time to rethink how we evaluate middle-aged workers.
For decades, the typical life path was straightforward: spend youth learning, build a career through middle age, peak around 50, then gradually slow down before retiring to enjoy later life with family.
That model made sense when work depended largely on physical strength and memorized knowledge. But the age of artificial intelligence—and rapid advances in medicine—has changed the equation.
In the past, growing older often meant declining productivity. It was difficult for a construction worker, farmer, or mechanic to perform at 70 as they had at 30.
Today, many occupations depend less on physical ability and more on judgment, experience, and decision-making. Technology has become an extension of human capability, reducing many of the limitations traditionally associated with age.
At the same time, advances in nutrition, exercise, and healthcare have transformed what aging looks like. Muscle loss, chronic illness, and physical decline are no longer inevitable. Many people in their fifties and sixties remain healthy, active, and professionally productive.

An even more profound change is taking place in how we define intelligence.
For generations, intelligence was closely associated with remembering facts, formulas, and information. Today, AI can retrieve and process enormous amounts of data in seconds. Memorization is no longer a decisive advantage.
This does not diminish human value. Instead, it forces us to ask a more important question: What is intelligence really for?
The human brain was never designed to remember everything. Forgetting information we rarely use is a natural and efficient process. An older person may forget a name or a date, but that does not necessarily indicate weaker thinking.
The real value of intelligence lies not in storing information but in interpreting it.
Our ancestors expressed this insight long ago: "Wisdom does not come to the young, nor vigor to the old." Older people are not wiser because they remember more. They are wiser because decades of experience have taught them to recognize patterns, anticipate consequences, and view situations from multiple angles.
A young person may see an opportunity; an experienced person often sees both the opportunity and its risks.
A young person may find a solution; an experienced person is more likely to consider its unintended consequences.
A young person may make a quick decision; an experienced person often weighs its long-term impact.
This ability to think across multiple dimensions is precisely what becomes more valuable in the age of AI.
Artificial intelligence excels at retrieving information, analyzing data, and optimizing solutions. But deciding what truly matters, balancing competing priorities, and judging ethical or long-term consequences remain deeply human responsibilities.
As AI makes knowledge increasingly accessible, experience becomes more valuable—not less.
The competitive advantage of a 50-year-old is therefore not memory or speed. It is judgment.
In the decades ahead, that may prove to be the most valuable skill of all.
