World's largest battery-electric aircraft completes 27-minute test flight for $5

Heart Aerospace, a Sweden-founded, U.S.-based aviation company, conducted the maiden flight of its full-scale X1 demonstrator on Aug. 12, 2026, at Plattsburgh International Airport.

The aircraft remained airborne for nearly half an hour, reaching an altitude of 335 meters (1,100 feet).

According to the company, the X1 is driven entirely by a battery-electric propulsion system capable of producing more than 1 megawatt of power.

With a wingspan of 106 feet (32 meters), a length of 76 feet from nose to tail, and a takeoff weight exceeding 25,000 pounds (11.3 tons), the X1 is the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown.

The flight was conducted under a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category, issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The comprehensive test sequence evaluated the aircraft's performance during taxiing, takeoff, climbing, maneuvering, and landing, Heart Aerospace stated on its website.

It said that the primary goal of the mission was to demonstrate the viability of all-electric flight on a scale comparable to commercial airline operations.

While the $5 energy bill highlights the aircraft's efficiency, Gulf News noted that this figure represents only the electricity consumed during the 27-minute experimental flight.

It does not account for total operating costs, which would include pilot compensation, maintenance, airport fees, battery degradation, financing, and insurance.

The successful test flight arrives amid a sustained surge in global jet fuel prices.

For the week ending Aug. 7, jet fuel averaged $3.50 per gallon, a 63% increase year-on-year.

Heart Aerospace emphasized that this volatility highlights the potential for electric propulsion to deliver structurally lower operating costs, ultimately decoupling airlines from unpredictable global oil markets.

"With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner," said Anders Forslund, founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace.

"Electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and, ultimately, lower the cost of air travel for passengers," Forslund added.
