Singaporean caught at Bangkok airport in $150,000 tax evasion case

The man was detained on June 3 while attempting to board a flight back to Singapore, following an investigation by Thailand’s Economic Crime Suppression Division. Police said he is suspected of value-added tax (VAT) fraud amounting to ฿5.24 million ($153,400), the Bangkok Post reported.

The man was identified as David Liu, a former director of media analytics company Isentia Monitoring Services in Thailand, The Straits Times reported.

The division’s commander Thatphum Charuprat said the arrest was made after Thailand’s Revenue Department accused the man, then an authorized director of Isentia, of filing false tax documents between July and October 2015, falsely reporting no income and making inconsistencies in VAT filings.

While the suspect acknowledged holding the director role at the time, he denied any involvement in fraudulent activity, police said.
