Nguyen Tat Thanh School, Hanoi University of Education's Gifted Junior High School, the High School for Gifted Students under the Hanoi National University of Education, and the High School of Education Sciences under the University of Education - Vietnam National University, announced last night that classes would move online.

They cited forecasts from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, which said Hanoi and several northern localities would be pounded by heavy rains possibly exceeding 200 mm in 24 hours in some areas.

Newton Secondary and High School has moved the start from 7:45 a.m. to 8 a.m. and also has contingency online plans in case the weather worsens.

Pascal Secondary School has delayed classes until 8:30 a.m., prepared breakfast for all students and arranged for teachers to remain on duty until 6 p.m. to assist parents who arrive late to pick up their children.

At Doan Thi Diem Primary and Secondary School and the Ngoi Sao Hoang Mai school system, parents were given flexibility to decide whether their children should attend school. If travel from their residential areas or along the route to school is difficult, parents can keep their children at home.

Ngoi Sao Hoang Mai, which has from primary through high-school levels, said it would have classes for students who come to school.

For students who travel by school bus, the school will adjust the routes and pickup times depending on the weather conditions and notify families in advance.

At the university level, the Academy of Finance, Hanoi University of Finance and Banking, and several other institutions have also switched to online lessons.

These are mostly private institutions, which began the new school year at the start of August.

Most public schools have flexibility in scheduling the start of new school years, with the earliest opening this year being Aug. 24, and so students have not been affected.

Narra is lingering over the waters east of Bach Long Vi Island near the coast of Quang Ninh and Hai Phong, with maximum sustained winds of 88 kph and gusts of 103-117 kph.

Though the storm has not made landfall, it is dumping heavy rains over a large part of the northeastern region.

Flooding and landslides have affected 735 locations along roads, including 700 in Lang Son Province and 33 in Bac Ninh.

One person was killed in a landslide in Lang Son.
