Foreigners arrested after failing to steal $7,700 in gold in central Vietnam

The suspects distracted the owner to take the jewelry before fleeing in a car with two accomplices.

According to police, the pair visited the Tien Vien gold shop in the central Vietnam's province around 7 a.m. on Sept. 15. The shop had just opened for the day and was empty of customers.

The male suspect engaged the shop owner in conversation, repeatedly asking questions to serve as a distraction. During this time, the female suspect discreetly approached a gold cabinet, unlocked it using a key that had been left in the lock, and removed the three bracelets.

A man and a woman flee to a car where two foreign nationals are waiting on a street in Dak Lak Province on Sept. 15, 2026, as seen in security camera footage.

When the owner realized what was happening and shouted for help, the woman dropped the gold beneath the cabinet.

The pair then fled to a white getaway car parked across the street, where two other foreign nationals were waiting. The driver immediately sped away.

Following an emergency alarm from the shop, local police coordinated with provincial traffic police and requested assistance from the Xuan Loc Commune police to aid in the pursuit.

At approximately 8 a.m., authorities apprehended the two primary suspects and their accomplices along National Highway 1D, about 40 kilometers from the crime scene.

Police are taking statements from the four individuals and have not yet released their identities.
