China strengthens standing on Asia's top universities as Singapore slips in QS rankings

The pinnacle of the list remains unchanged, with the University of Hong Kong (HKU) retaining the number one position, followed by mainland China's Peking University in second place, according to the rankings released Nov. 3.

Tsinghua University climbed six places to third, driven by its strong research output and high-impact academic collaborations, according to QS.

The university's focus on advanced technical and interdisciplinary fields, including artificial intelligence, computer science, materials science, architecture and environmental technology, has reinforced its academic reputation.

Its rise also reflects growth in research volume and citation impact, as well as its role in supplying talent to China's expanding technology, infrastructure and engineering industries.

Tsinghua scored a perfect 100 in both academic and employer reputation, alongside near-perfect scores for research citations and international research networks.

QS assesses universities using 11 indicators. Academic reputation carries the highest weight at 30%, followed by employer reputation at 20%. The remaining indicators, weighted between 2.5% and 10%, cover faculty-to-student ratios, the proportion of faculty with PhDs, research citations and internationalization.

Hong Kong institutions showed strong upward momentum across the board. City University of Hong Kong jumped three places to fourth, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong rose two spots to fifth.

Singapore's leading universities slipped. The National University of Singapore (NUS) dropped three places to tie for sixth, while Nanyang Technological University (NTU) fell five spots to eighth.

Both universities improved their scores in academic reputation and employer reputation, but they experienced a relative slide in their standing for citations per paper compared to surging rivals in Hong Kong and mainland China.

This marks the first time since 2011 that Singapore has no academic institutions ranked in Asia's top five.

Despite these shifts, the overall composition of the top 10 remained stable, featuring five universities from Hong Kong, three from mainland China, and two from Singapore.

The 2027 edition evaluated over 1,700 universities across the region.

China leads in representation

Mainland China remains the most represented location, fielding 448 universities, including 53 new entrants. Yunnan University stood out with a massive 147-place leap to 452nd, driven by gains in employer reputation, faculty-student ratios, and citations per faculty.

Hong Kong recorded the highest proportion of improving institutions, with 73% of its universities moving up the ladder.

Hong Kong Baptist University broke into the region's top 50, and Hong Kong Metropolitan University marked the territory's largest climb, rising 56 places to 337th.

India is the second most represented nation with 325 ranked universities, welcoming 34 new entrants. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi remains the country's highest-ranked institution at 66th, despite a seven-place drop. GLA University posted one of the region's most dramatic improvements, surging 218 places to 491st on the back of strong student exchange metrics.

Japan placed third in representation with 153 universities. The University of Tokyo held its position as the nation's leader at 27th, topping all of Asia in both academic and employer reputation. Shibaura Institute of Technology marked Japan's biggest jump, rising 85 places to 410th.

South Korea fielded 108 universities, led by Yonsei University holding steady at 11th. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) re-entered the rankings tied at 15th alongside Sungkyunkwan University, which climbed one spot.

Although Singapore’s top two institutions dropped in the overall rankings, the city-state still commanded the highest mean average scores across seven indicators, including employer reputation and international student ratio, among locations with at least five ranked universities.

Across the broader Asian landscape, several lower-ranked institutions recorded triple-digit gains. South Korea's Inje University achieved the region's largest leap, rocketing 337 places to 366th, largely fueled by employer reputation.

Other notable surges included Uzbekistan's Namangan State Technical University (up 245 places to 469th), India's Woxsen University (up 195 places to 499th), and Indonesia's Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (up 162 places to 364th).
