Research-focused methodology

The Best Global Universities rankings assess over 2,250 institutions across more than 100 countries and territories. Rather than evaluating undergraduate teaching quality or student life, the methodology focuses deliberately on academic research performance and regional or global reputation.

U.S. News evaluates schools using 13 research-based indicators, developed with input from bibliometric experts at the analytics firm Clarivate. The most heavily weighted factors, each accounting for 12.5% of the total, are global research reputation, regional research reputation, and the number of publications ranking among the top 10% most cited worldwide.

To calculate the final standings, the weighted scores are combined to produce an overall score. The highest-ranked university globally receives a perfect score of 100, while all other institutions are graded on a scale from zero to 99 based on their performance relative to the top institution.

According to U.S. News, the index ultimately aims to help prospective students compare institutions with strong international research footprints and provide a benchmark for assessing global academic impact.
