His mother, Nur Syazwani, said she thought her son was joking when he loaded the durian into his school bag the night before, Berita Harian reported on July 29.

"I didn't expect him to really surprise his teacher. I thought he would just leave the durian there, but he told her it was a gift," the 29-year-old mother of two told the newspaper.

The teacher had asked her class what snack they wanted to bring in the next day, and the boy answered durian, according to his mother's posts on Threads, Siakap Keli reported.

His grandfather had bought a few durians that same night.

His mother told him to leave the fruit at home. He does not eat durian and cannot stand the smell, she wrote in a post carried by Siakap Keli, and she worried the odor would bother other people.

He packed it anyway, without telling her.

"Maybe he wants the teacher to remember him," she wrote.

The teacher sent her a video, Kosmo reported. In it, the boy hugs her, then opens his school bag to show what he had brought.

"I don't even know how much the durian weighed," the mother told Berita Harian.

"But the durian he picked was really cute. It was small, just like him."

Nur Syazwani posted the video and photos on Threads on July 22 and 23. They have since drawn more than 17,000 likes, over 800 reshares and almost 300 comments, according to Berita Harian.

One woman wrote that her son had carried three durians to school for his teacher in second grade, in a comment reported by Siakap Keli.

"Now my son is 30 and the teacher is 70, but we are still in touch," she wrote.

Durian, with its strong smell and taste, is one of the high-end tropical fruits that is favored by many across Southeast Asia.
